As my mom stood in the corner and smiled with so much joy in her heart, it showed through her body language. This was the year of her only daughter’s seventh birthday, and she had been making my birthday cakes for a few years by then.
But this year was different.
I was obsessed with Barbie dolls. And when I say obsessed, I mean I had a doll for every day of the week. All shades white dolls, Black dolls, you name it, I had them. Barbie was my world.
So, for my seventh birthday, I had friends and family over, and my mom made me a Barbie doll cake completely from scratch. The Barbie sat proudly in the middle of the sheet cake, and to seven-year-old me, this was everything. My friends were just as excited as I was.
That cake represented love.
It represented my mom taking the time to create something special for her daughter. It was a moment of celebration that I still carry with me today.
Now, all these years later, I am taking the chance to make my own birthday cake.
No Barbie cake. No sheet cake.
This year, I wanted something more elevated. Something that combined my newfound love for baking and paid homage to where I live the beautiful home state of peaches.
And did I mention I am not really a cake girl?
You would rarely see me choose cake as my dessert. The only cake I truly swear by is my grandmother’s German chocolate cake, which is still my absolute favorite cake. But my grandmother is deceased, so that cake remains a beautiful memory that I hold close to my heart.
Then I discovered olive oil cake.
And when I say I fell in love… OMG.
The first time I made one was earlier this year for the Wins Cake, and I ate that cake in less than a week. It was everything I loved in a dessert. It was moist and light at the same time. The cake carried so many different flavors, and every bite felt special.
I loved the simplicity of it.
I loved the elegance of it.
I loved that it felt like me.
So here I am again.
This time, I am making a Peach Blossom Olive Oil Cake with Vanilla Bean Mascarpone Cream.
And I am so excited.
Peaches are one of my favorite stone fruits, right alongside cherries, and olive oil cakes are officially my jam. So, I decided to combine the two and create a birthday cake that speaks to who I am now.
This is not just a birthday cake. This is a cake celebrating the woman I have become.
Forty has been a year of transition.
Honestly, it has been one of my greatest achievements.
At 40, I learned how to set clear boundaries. I learned how to say how I feel. I learned that choosing myself was not selfish. Being a people pleaser had been who I was for 39 years, but when I turned 40, something shifted.
I started seeing the woman I was becoming.
And this cake embodies walking into 41.
Forty felt like cleaning out the rooms of my life. It was the year of releasing, rebuilding, healing, and facing things I needed to face.
But 41 feels lighter.
Forty-one feels like I can begin to rest in my 40s. I can embrace the new adventures, the new challenges, and the uncomfortable spaces because I trust the woman I am becoming.
Who would have thought that the seven-year-old little girl who was so excited about her Barbie cake would grow into a woman creating a Peach Blossom Olive Oil Cake with Vanilla Bean Mascarpone Cream?
The little girl who loved being celebrated is now learning how to celebrate herself.
And that feels like the sweetest gift.
Happy Birthday to me.
Here’s to 41.
